The presence of the Augustinians in the region that now forms part of the Archdiocese of Boston, dates to the early years of the 19th Century when the missionary, Father Philip Lariscy, O.S.A. built Saint Augustine Chapel in South Boston in 1818, the oldest standing Catholic building in Massachusetts. Thirty years later, Father James O’Donnell, O.S.A. arrived in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where he also labored as a lone missionary for 13 years. He founded the church of Saint Mary in Lawrence and blessed the first Catholic chapel in Andover. At Father O’Donnell’s death, two friars, Ambrose Mullen and Edward Mullen, respectively, were sent to care for the people of these two churches. Over time, the ministry of the friars expanded to include seven churches that came under the care of the Augustinians in the city of Lawrence: Saint Mary, Saint Augustine, Saint Laurence O’Toole, Holy Rosary, Immaculate Conception, Assumption, and Saints Peter and Paul, as well as Saint Augustine, Andover, and Saint Thomas of Villanova, Wilmington. Over the course of these 200 years, hundreds of friars have labored in these parishes, as well as in the two schools founded by the Province in the region, Merrimack College and Austin Preparatory School, and many scores of young men have entered the Order from these ministries.
